The item for sale is a nice Zeiss KF2 phase contrast microscope guaranteed to be complete and ready for immediate use. It has a four-place nosepiece containing four (4) authentic, Zeiss achromatic objectives, of which the 40X and 100X are equipped for phase contrast. The specifications of the objectives are as follows: 10X/0.22, 16X/0.32, Ph 40X/0.65, and Ph 100X/1.25 oil. All of these are designed for a 160mm tube length. The 40X objective is made for a 0.17mm cover glass thickness; whereas, the cover glass thickness is not so critical optically for other three lenses.
The binocular head is also in nice condition optically. It has a magnification of 1.25X, and it was made according to the Siedentopf design. In the Siedentopf design, the tube length is maintained as the Interpupillary distance is adjusted. The head is affixed to a circular dovetail mount, so it can be positioned anywhere within 360 degrees horizontally.
It is secured in position by means of a thumb screw, which should be tightened again after each time it is moved. The microscope is equipped with two 10 X Zeiss Cpl (compensating plano) eyepieces. Cpl eyepieces are not absolutely required for achromatic objectives, but the image can nevertheless be improved by using them. They are marked with the glasses symbol indicating that they have a high eyepoint, and are therefore well suited to people who must wear glasses while using the microscope. The high eyepoint oculars additionally tend to be more comfortable for other users as well. There is no focusing collar on the left eyepiece tube of the head, but the left eyepiece is focusing, so it can be used to compensate for any difference between the focus of the user's right and left eye. Optically, both eyepiece lenses are in in good condition, and the optics appear nearly scratch free. They are in good cosmetic condition as well and show comparatively little wear on the finish of the barrel. The substage condenser has two positions, one for low power and one for phase contrast. To switch between the two pull the condenser down (It's spring loaded) and rotate. There is a functioning iris diaphragm, which is especially useful for the low power objectives. The stage is an authentic Zeiss product and shows neither excessive wear nor any other problem. The mechanical stage is integral with the plate and has low-mounted coaxial controls. These controls move smoothly and easily, serving well to hold and reposition a specimen. The slide clip is a separate part attached to the stage by means of two thumb screws. The slide clip holds specimens with adequate force, but is easy to control in order to avoid chipping the corners of glass slides. The illuminator and it's attendant electronics are located in the base and are controlled by a single knob. The original halogen bulb has been replaced by an LED, which runs much cooler than a halogen bulb.
In addition, the LED that is now installed is far longer lasting. Moreover, the light that it gives off is truly white and doesn't change color significantly as you change the intensity. The power cord is permanently attached to the base of the microscope, and it is in working order. The coarse and fine focus are the usual design for these microscopes and likewise work very well.
As with the optics and mechanics, this microscope is likewise in very good cosmetic condition with few flaws in the original finish. There is an inventory number scratched on the base, there are scratches the the cover plate between the eyepiece tubes, there is a small ding on one of the eyepieces, and the black paint of the 100X objective is rough. The paint of the 10X and 40X objectives also shows a slight amount of similar roughness.
Fortunately, the optical integrity of the lenses is entirely unaffected by the condition of the paint. Please evaluate the cosmetic condition further by taking a close look at the photographs. The Zeiss KF2 is a good choice for a serious microscopist on a budget, and with phase contrast, it is excellent for examining unstained subjects e. Pond water, living cells, etc. Combine great optics with precision mechanical components and rugged design, and what could be better?Furthermore, I would be remiss, if I didn't mention that this fine instrument would make a great present for a microscopist of any level of sophistication. Why should anyone have to attempt to make do with dysfunctional Chinese trash, while these great microscopes are still available in good shape? This microscope has is been rigorously tested and is working in all respects.
The supply of these nice instruments is, unfortunately, dwindling, so it would be a good idea not to wait.
